What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is 94% similar to natural human glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which decreases blood sugar levels in a glucose-dependent manner by enhancing the secretion of insulin. GLP-1 acts as a physiological regulator of appetite and thereby reducing food intake by reducing feelings of hunger and increasing feelings of fullness/satiety. It also slows gastric emptying and reduces appetite, which causes weight loss in many patients. For that reason, health care providers have used semaglutide for more than 15 years to treat Type 2 diabetes. There have been several anti-obesity medications that help suppress appetite and achieve weight loss, but semaglutide performs on a new level.

How does it work?

In order to be so effective, especially for those who have previously felt frustrated by their weight loss journey, Semaglutide works in a few ways to target the hunger centers in your brain that stabilize constant hunger, cravings, or food-related thoughts. When you’re not preoccupied with why things are or aren’t working, your body has the chance to actually make the changes needed. From this shift in perspective, we have seen that it is exceedingly easier to change your habits and practice healthy lifestyle behaviors.

“An early study of 2,000 obese adults compared people using semaglutide plus a diet and exercise program with people who made the same lifestyle changes without semaglutide. After 68 weeks, half of the participants using semaglutide lost 15% of their body weight, and nearly a third lost 20%. Participants who incorporated only lifestyle changes lost about 2.4% of their weight.” – UCLA Health

What are the benefits?

After a clinical trial to study semaglutide weight loss, Dr. John Wilding at the Endocrine Society at the University of Liverpool said,

“Our findings suggest that semaglutide, through body weight loss and improvement of body composition, has the potential to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke in people with overweight or obesity.”

For those with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more, along with other health conditions due to excess weight such as high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, the FDA-approved semaglutide injection is an excellent choice for the long-term management of weight and blood sugar.

Semaglutide injection is designed to help overweight or obese adults and those with type 2 diabetes:

  • Manage their blood sugar levels in those who experience high blood sugar
  • Lower the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke
  • Support weight loss efforts alongside diet and exercise regimens

What are the Side Effects?

The side effects of semaglutide are typically mild — especially when compared to the complications associated with overweight and obesity. It is important to discuss the possible side effects of any medication with your healthcare provider. Always remember that if you experience any unusual side effects, seek medical help immediately. According to the prescription label for brand name Ozempic:

“The most common side effects of the Ozempic® injection may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach (abdominal) pain, and constipation”

In our experience, the first one to two doses 50% of clients had experienced the following symptoms:

Stomach issues, including nausea, vomiting, pain or distension (bloat)

Gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, constipation and gassiness are the most common complaints among people just starting semaglutide. But you may be able to reduce the side effects by beginning on a lower dose and then slowly increasing the amount you take.
